Kirakira names are not traditional ones, but they are influenced by the nomenclature of Japanese pop-culture.

キラキラネームには、２通りの慣習が存在しています。
There exist two naming conventions.

１つめの慣習は、よく知られた音韻に、あえて複雑でわかりにくい漢字　を当てます。
The first convention uses similar-sounding common names with obscure and unintelligible Kanji.

例えば、浩(ひろし)はよくある日本人名ですが、キラキラネームでは火露志と漢字を当てます。
For example, 浩(ひろし) is a common Japanese name. In Kirakira name, Kanji 火露詩 is associated with the sound ひろし.

２つ目の慣習は、漢字の意味を用います。漢字１つは、それ自身に意味があります。他の漢字と組み合わされた時に、異なる意味を無数に持つことができます。
The second convention uses meaning of Kanji. A single kanji has meaning in itself. When Kanji is paired with another Kanji, you can have up to dozens of different meanings.

例えば、光(ひかり)と宙(ちゅう)を組み合わせて、光宙(ぴかちゅう)というキラキラネームがあります。
For example, 光 literally means "light" and 宙 means "space." However, some parents made a combination of them 光宙 and started calling 光宙 Pikachu.


キラキラネームには、論争があります。
Kirakira names are contriversal.

伝統的ではないので、規範的立場からは、非難されています。
They are criticized for not being traditional from a prescriptive perspective.

一方で、現代日本語として、記述的立場からは、容認されています。
On the contrary, they get accepted as modern Japanese from a prescriptive perspective.
