解説 CommentaryHiragana あ is the sister chracter of Katakana ア. Both あ and ア sound the same. The origin of あ is Kanji 安 阿 亜, coming from the Asia continent to the Japanese archipelago. Before the arrival of Kanji, the archipelago has only spoken words. There was no letter to write down on paper or wood plates. After the arrival of Kanji, people found Kanji was useful to transcribe native Japanese sounds as well as Chinese words.
In the Nara period (奈良時代 710CE--794CE 84years), many Kanji were selected for the same sound. For example, "A" sound was transcribed as 安, 阿, or 亜 interchangeably. Using sound part of the Kanji discretely is called Kana (仮名) or Manyokana (万葉仮名), for they frequently appeared in the imperial collection Manyoshu (万葉集). Modern Chinese still use this method to transcribe foreign words up to the present. In the middle of the Heian period (平安時代 794CE--1192CE 398years) people invented Hiragana あ by Modifying Kanji 安.
